Harvesting Abundance: Plums, Beats & Fermentation

Summer brings a moment of abundance — when fruit ripens faster than we can hold it.

Harvesting Abundance invites children and families into a joyful, hands-on gathering where plums, cherries, and grapes become the centre of learning, play, and connection.

Together, we explore how fruit can be transformed — through fermentation, preservation, and shared cultural practices — while music and movement carry the rhythm of the day.

This is a space where food, sound, and storytelling come together in ways that are sensory, playful, and rooted in community.

What You’ll Experience

  • Exploration of seasonal fruit (plums, cherries, grapes) as they ripen

  • Child-friendly fermentation demonstrations — bubbles, smells, and taste

  • Cultural food makers sharing simple preservation techniques

  • Music woven throughout the gathering (DJ or curated playlist)

  • A family potluck featuring fruit-based dishes and drinks

  • Hands-on, sensory learning designed especially for children

What Children & Families Will Take Home

  • Simple ideas for preserving fruit at home

  • A deeper understanding of how food changes and lasts over time

  • Shared memories rooted in taste, smell, and sound

Why This Gathering Matters

This workshop is designed as a family-centred cultural celebration space where:

  • Children learn through doing, tasting, and exploring

  • Families connect through shared meals and collective care

  • Cultural food knowledge is practiced in real time

  • Surplus fruit is activated through joyful preservation

It is also part of a broader effort to document and return cultural knowledge to community, ensuring stories and practices continue across generations.
