GROWING IN NEW SOIL: A Documentary Launch & Community Gathering
For one evening, we'll gather at the Dock to watch the film together, share food, hear from the people behind the work, and explore what it means to carry cultural food knowledge into new places while allowing it to take root in new soil.
What does it mean to grow in a place that isn't where your story began?
Join Iye Creative Society for the community launch of Growing in New Soil, a new 27-minute documentary exploring culturally relevant foods, migration, cultural memory, adaptation and the knowledge carried through food.
Growing in New Soil asks us to look at food differently.
A seed can travel.
A recipe can cross an ocean.
A growing practice can survive displacement.
A meal can become an archive.
For one evening, we'll gather at the Dock to watch the film together, share food, hear from the people behind the work, and explore what it means to carry cultural food knowledge into new places while allowing it to take root in new soil.
THE EVENING
Welcome & Gathering
Arrive, connect with community and share food before the screening.
Growing in New Soil
A screening of Iye Creative Society's 27-minute documentary exploring culturally relevant foods, cultural memory, migration and adaptation.
Community Conversation
Following the film, we'll hear reflections from the filmmakers, community contributors and collaborators, followed by a moderated conversation about food, culture, land, migration and belonging.
Food & Connection
Stay for food, conversation and community. Because some stories are meant to be shared around a table.
WHY "GROWING IN NEW SOIL"?
Across diasporic communities, food knowledge has travelled with people.
It has moved through seeds, recipes, gardens, kitchens, markets, communal meals and everyday acts of care.
When people move, food moves with them.
But food doesn't simply remain unchanged. It adapts. It finds new soil. New climates. New hands. New kitchens. New generations.
Growing in New Soil explores that process.
The film is part of Iye Creative Society's broader work to build climate-resilient food futures rooted in culture, connecting communities with culturally relevant crops, food knowledge, land and the stories that have travelled across generations.
At the heart of this work is a simple belief:
Food is memory.
Memory is living knowledge.
Culture can take root in new soil.
